Latest Quest Update Adds Cloud Backups and Mixed Reality View
Meta launched new sets of features for its Quest headsets via an update that it rolled out last week. The update brings new changes such as the mixed reality camera mode, cloud backups as well as other settings to add up to the already impressive feature set in the Oculus Quest headset.
The cloud backups feature allows you to restore user-specific data such as headset settings and game saves to your Quest apps when you want to update, replace or reset your Oculus Quest headset. The cloud backup feature can be activated in the “Device” tab found in the settings menu.
The update also adds a cool Mixed Reality view. This is the different from Live Overlay feature that was added in the v29 and imposes your body over the first-person view of an app or game. The Mixed Reality view enables you to see yourself interacting inside the game from a third-person perspective as viewed from your phone’s camera. Meta provided a GIF of this that shows what this will look like. A user will, for instance, be able to see themselves striking the blocks and dodging obstacles in Beat Saber. Meta also revealed that a dozen apps also provide support for this feature including some of the major hits like Superhot VR, Pistol Whip, and Synth Riders. You can check a list of supported apps here.
Users will need an iPhone XS or newer that runs iOS 11 higher in order to use the mobile mixed reality camera feature. Meta mistakenly added support for Android phones and tablets in its support page but this has since been removed.
The new software has also changed where to enable multiuser support. The feature allows you to add multiple Facebook accounts to the headset. It also enables app sharing which allows users to share apps among these added Facebook profiles. Previously, these profiles were nested inside the “experimental features” settings tab but both of these are now moving to the “Accounts” section found in the settings menu.
The new v35 will also lay the foundation for the use of Messenger to make voice calls while wearing the headset. It also adds other new cosmetic items which you can use in the Horizon Workrooms, Meta’s version of a virtual reality office.
The new Quest software will also have a public test channel. Click here to sign up for it in order to test the new features much earlier before they are rolled out to the rest of users. However, Meta’s blog states that once you join the public test channel, you won’t be able to leave until the release of a new public software update.
