The long-rumored Apple’s augmented reality and virtual reality headset might be arriving in less than a year. The rumor mill is finally zoning in on a possible release date.

Apple’s headset is expected to have both augmented reality and virtual reality functionality and will lend itself to disparate applications including gaming, media, and communications. Recent reports now suggest that users won’t have to wait too long to lay their hands on the new virtual reality headset. There is no concrete date yet but the timeframe for the release is gradually becoming apparent.

According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the headset was set to launch in the second quarter of 2022. However, due to the number of delays with starting the mass production, the most realistic timeline now appears to be the fourth quarter of 2022 which will run from October 1 to December 31 2022. The launch of headset could therefore be in as little as 10 months from now.

It also possible that Apple could give us a peek at the headset at the WDDC scheduled for June, 2022 that will give developers sufficient time to prepare apps for the device ahead of its launch. According to Morgan Stanley’s analysts, Apple’s VR headset project is “approaching liftoff” and mirrors the timeline of Apple Watch’s development ahead of its launch.

It is expected that the Apple headset will feature a lightweight design, two micro-OLED displays, two main processors, 15 optical modules, eye tracking, Wi-Fi 6E connectivity, object tracking, see-through AR mode as well as hand gesture controls.

It isn’t clear what the device will cost. Reports have given a price range of between $1,000 to $3,000.

The above concept render looks almost similar to the one done by AppleInsider and should Apple’s upcoming AR/VR headset, it appears like it will be a “one generation and done” headset as many AR manufacturers like Magic Leap and Nreal are building devices with very small form factors that look almost like sunglasses and it is this form factor that will get dominate the market.
