The VR app offers designs and architects several advantages. It has 3D visualization and presence that provides users with a better sense of space as well as proportions as well as the support for passthrough mode that allows users to factor in the physical environment in their Virtual Reality design and vice versa.
The app allows you to import 3D models from other programs like Revit, Unity, Sketchup, and Rhino. The 3D models can also be edited and exported again. Arkio provides support for Meta’s new avatar system, making it possible to have lively alter egos.
Arkio has been available on App Lab for at least the past year. Now it is officially available on the Oculus Store.
The app can also be put into other uses beyond design and architecture such as by metaverse designers, hobbyists, and universities. Arkio CEO Hilmar Gunnarsson states that augmented reality and virtual reality provide the ultimate medium for architecture and design with its three-dimensional space provides the perfect space for the three-dimensional architectural and design work. With virtual reality, you don’t just have to rely on your imagination to get a look and feel of what the structure will look like once it is constructed. You get a realistic rendition of what the property will appear like right at the design stage. Also, the ability to collaborate in real-time, irrespective of the location, streamlines the design process and opens up other possibilities for designers working on projects.
The free version of Arkio contains all the important features.
Next, the startup intends to exploit the possibilities offered by the passthrough mode and is currently working on new features for this. Arkio is also planning core tool improvements as well as the ability to create and share custom 3D models and also import larger scenes. The tool will also feature broader compatibility with other online platforms and design tools.
Arkio is freely available for download on the Oculus Store. The free version has the modeling tools, a collaboration feature, and a passthrough mode.
There are example projects and tutorials that you can turn to learn the program. The monthly Arkio subscription option allows you to import content from or into Unity.
