YouTuber and XR analyst Brad Lynch is now reporting that the successor to the Quest 2 headset could launch as soon as 2023.

In May this year, The Information reported that Meta has lined up two headsets for launch in 2023 and 2024. The two headsets are codenamed Stinson and Cardiff. Lynch is now reporting that the Stinson headset will be the successor to Meta Quest 2 headset.

Lynch says the Stinson headset will be a major leap for Meta in the same way that the Meta Quest 2 was in relation to the original Oculus Quest headset in October 2020.

The Quest 3 will reportedly launch during the 2023 Christmas holidays. Although he doesn’t mention that Cardiff headset, there are speculations it could be a Meta Quest 3 Pro that will feature expanded or improved hardware capabilities. As a result, specs-wise, the Cardiff headset will likely be technically closer to Meta’s Project Cambria, the company’s upcoming high-end virtual reality headset.

If the successor to the Quest 2 launch comes along by December 2023, then the Quest 2 headset would have been in the market for roughly three years, twice as long as the Quest 1 was in the market before Quest 2 was launched.

The launch of the Quest 3 headset will not make the Quest 2 headset immediately obsolete. A lot of the new virtual reality apps for the Quest 3 headset will likely also be available on the Quest 2 headset due to the latter’s larger install base.

However, after some time, we are likely going to see higher profile titles that will be exclusively for the Quest 3 headset. Some of the bigger titles such as Assassin’s Creed Nexus and GTA: San Andreas will likely be released for both Quest 2 and Quest 3 headsets and will extend its lifespan in the market.

Although not much detail has been given about the Stinson headset, Zuckerberg had hinted that the device would feature both eye tracking and face tracking. It is also likely to have a new processor which could be the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2.

The Cardiff headset, like the Quest 3 Pro, would have a higher quality OLED display. In his blog post, Lynch claims he got details about the Cardiff headset specifications although he says he wants these details confirmed by other sources first before he makes them public.

VR Air Bridge

Lynch also writes that Meta is working with third-party companies like D-Link for the release of Wi-Fi dongles called VR Air Bridges which will feature Meta-made drivers that make it easier to set it up for the Air Link PC VR Streaming feature in Quest.

At the same time, Meta is reportedly also heavily invested in its Avalanche Cloud gaming service. They are keen on upgrading the reliability of the wireless PC VR streaming to their virtual reality devices using special USB dongles.

On the firmware front, there are now SystemUX elements that enable users on Quest/Cambria to view the status of their Air Bridge connection. Lynch says Meta will likely soon make additional public announcements about the VR Air Bridge.

On Meta’s AR Play

Lynch reports that Meta is still on track with its AR plans in spite of recent freezes and backpedaling on its XR investments. The Cambria headset, for instance, will have a major “AR component.” The company’s “Hypernova” smartglasses are still in its wearables plan even though the technology for immersive eyeglasses with a normal form factor is still years from realization. Lynch says Meta is currently focusing on productizing the possible while pausing or slowing down on its more ambitious high-tech projects.

He writes that the most recent firmware shows new drivers that suggest new products and ARFIRMWARE. Meta Hammerhead is reportedly the company’s internal name for its smartglasses according to the analyst.
