According to FCC filings discovered by the tech publication Protocol, Pico is planning to launch its Pico 4 and Pico 4 Pro headsets simultaneously and the launch could happen soon.

Protocol discovered FCC documents that show the two devices could hit the market soon. The documents were filed by the FCC last week.

The US FCC performs tests on electronic devices to ensure that they comply with the radiation protection standards. FCC approvals are usually sought towards the close of the product of product development so the filings indicate that the market launch for the two devices may be imminent.

New Headsets and New Controllers

The documents filed at the FCC show that Pico plans to launch the Pico 4 and Pico 4 Pro headset models simultaneously. Both of these are standalone virtual reality headsets that do not need an external source such as a VR-ready PC or console. The Pico 4 Pro headset is codenamed Phoenix and will have both eye tracking and face recognition features.

The photos included in the filing also show that the two headsets will have redesigned controllers. The headsets have white exteriors, like the Pico Neo 3.

In April this year, VR hardware analyst Brad Lynch hinted that Pico was planning to launch a new Pro device that would likely be released in mid this year. The FCC filings seem to confirm that rumor.

The company is yet to provide any details of its Pico 4 and Pico 4 Pro headsets but they have likely been released to take on Meta’s headsets.

Meta’s affordable and relatively good spec Meta Quest headset currently dominates the consumer market and the company is set to launch the Cambria headset this fall, targeting enterprise use-cases. The Cambria headset could be named Quest Pro and will most likely feature both eye tracking and face tracking.

Pico was acquired in August 2021 by ByteDance, the TikTok parent company and the company is positioning itself to challenge Meta’s current market dominance in the social media and XR space.

Pico launched its first VR headset geared for the Western co9nsumer markets, the Pico Neo 3 Link in May this year. The headset has only had a limited release in Europe so far.

With the launch of its Pico 4 and Pico 4 Pro headsets, it appears ByteDance is looking to go full throttle in Meta’s biggest market: the US. The Pico website has also seen considerable expansion in the recent past and the company is also investing heavily in its app portfolio.
