Meta is Testing a New Remote Display App for Quest
It looks like Meta is testing a new Remote Display app built for Quest headsets that imports a PC or Mac into your Quest Home.
Meta has previously revealed that PC streaming was one of the features that the metaverse company was working on. It now looks like the feature may be rolled out sooner than expected. Meta shared a post on Facebook that demonstrates the feature’s functionality. However, it will take time before it is available to Meta owners due to Meta’s procedure for rolling out new features which typically begins with a limited beta release followed by a broader rollout.
Meta’s Horizon Workrooms app has been available for virtual meetings since 2021 and it includes a Remote Desktop app used to stream a Mac or PC to Quest 2. This app includes features such as spatial audio for multiuser meetings as well as a number of other innovative features. However, having to install Workrooms means grappling with an extra download that is an obstacle between your virtual reality headset and quick access to your PC or Mac inside Quest. The Remote Display app cuts to the chase and offers you a seamless solution for bringing your Mac or PC into Quest.
It isn’t clear yet whether the Remote Display app will work on Quest 2 and Quest Pro. It will also be interesting to see how the app will work with Meta’s current multitasking support.
There is already a listing on the Quest store for the Remote Display (Beta) app which mentions hand tracking and controller tracking support.
The screenshot from the listing, shown below, illustrates a computer being accessed along with other windows on Quest. The description says the app has been “optimized for use with Meta Quest Pro color passthrough.”
