Report: Mass Production for Apple Headset to Begin in March
Apple is set to begin the mass production of its AR/VR headset in March 2023, according to a DigiTimes report.
The Taiwanese publication DigiTimes report is citing sources that have hinted that Apple plans to use Pegatron, a Taiwan-based manufacturer, as its sole assembly manufacturer for the headset. The mass production of the Apple headset is set to begin “at the end of the first quarter of 2023” according to the report.
The publication claims that “rough estimates” give the headset’s 2023 production run at about 750,000 units. The report says that according to industry sources, the headset will mostly target “commercial markets”. Previous reports by The Information and Bloomberg have claimed that the headset’s price will be somewhere between $2000 and $3000.
An Apple-linked shell company filed a trademark in August for a ‘Reality One’, ‘Reality Pro’, and ‘Reality Processor’ which led to speculation that Apple’s upcoming headset could be branded Apple Reality.
Also, earlier this year, another shell company linked to Apple trademarked RealityOS. References to a ‘realityOS’ have also been discovered in App Store upload logs as well as in Apple code.
Bloomberg published a report stating that Apple is developing a realityOS (rOS) client for FaceTime which features face tracking that drives Memoji avatars, spatial versions of Notes and Calendar, a virtual reality version of Maps, the ability to view the display of Mac in-headset, as well as AR/VR tools for developers.
Ming-Chi Kuo, a leading supply chain analyst, has claimed that the Apple headset will be noticeably lighter than most of the current virtual reality headsets. He also claimed that the headset will have high-resolution OLED microdisplays. An earlier report by The Information, on the other hand, claims that the Apple headset will run the M2 chip that is used in the latest MacBooks and that the headset will have hand tracking, face tracking, eye tracking, leg tracking as well as iris scanning for payments and logins.
If the leaks and reports are accurate, the headset will feature a higher resolution and a more powerful processor among other features. The design will be slimmer than that of the Meta Quest Pro though the Apple device will carry a higher price tag.
Kuo thinks Apple is likely to host a media event in January which will be followed by the delivery of development kits 2 to 4 weeks later. Launch pre-orders will come in the second quarter of 2023 and the headset could be released before WWDC 2023, Apple’s annual software conference that always takes place in June.
