The much rumored and secretive Apple mixed-reality headset is set to be unveiled in early June this year but there are now reports that some Apple staff are skeptical about the readiness of the device, according to a New York Times report. The Times reports that some employees who worked on the project have already quit due to this while the rest remain doubtful about whether the device will be successful, especially at its steep price of $3,000.

Recent reports have suggested that Apple will reveal the device at the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) slated for June 5 to June 9.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman also reported that Apple recently demoed the headset to the company’s ‘Top 100’, a group consisting of the company’s top 100 executives, at the Steve Jobs Theater located in California. According to Gurman, this internal showcase suggested that Apple is drawing close to the public unveiling of the headset.

The New York Times writes that Apple is facing serious turmoil from some of the staff that engaged in the project. While this often happens whenever a new product is about to be unveiled, NYT reports that Apple is facing much stronger internal concerns with staff deeply concerned about the viability of the headset.

The Times reports that the concerns are coming from the fact the headset isn’t inspired by the same clarity that drove Apple’s development of its other products such as the iPod and the iPhone.

The headset’s looming launch is also clouded by the recent departures of top Apple executives working in the product design department. This began with the exit of Jony Ive in 2019 and that of his successor Evans Hankey in 2022. Since then, Apple is yet to hire someone to head its industrial design department with engineer Mike Rockwell currently steering the headset’s development.

The New York Times writes that some Apple employees and top leadership are doubtful about the prospects of the headset and this has driven many workers to doubt whether Apple is likely to postpone the device’s planned launch. However, the report states that the launch in June will most certainly happen because headset manufacturing is already underway, targeting the reveal date in three months’ time.

Although Apple kept the project under wraps for years, reports began streaming over the past few months, leaking details of the headset. According to the reports, the Apple mixed reality headset will look like ski goggles and have a physical crown through which users can switch in and out of the virtual reality experiences. The headset also features a physical battery pack that is inserted inside the user’s pocket.

At a price tag of $3,000, it is most likely targeting the professional or prosumer market. However, according to a previous Gurman report, Apple is also building a more affordable version of this headset slated for launch in 2023.
