Swiss startup Ostloong Innovation has launched a new augmented reality headset called LYRA that packs many features, including a language translator, navigation, a music player, mobile data integration, an AI secretary, and a host of other features.

The LYRA headset is Otsloong’s second product following its Sirius AR ski goggles. The AR smart glasses are AI-enabled. The company hasn’t provided details yet on the technology used in the AR headset or how it works.

The LYRA AR headset directly displays digital information in the wearer’s field of view. Its AR overlays can, for instance, be used in navigating through a city ‘heads-up’ without having to constantly glance at your smartphone. A drawback to the use of the AR device in navigation is that you first have to upload the route via a smartphone app by scanning a QR code.

The LYRA AR headset is controlled via a touchpad that is located on the side of the device. The LYRA augmented reality glasses have the following features: –

  • A multilingual live translator for text-to-text and speech-to-text translations.
  • It has a digital note-taking assistant capable of recording and translating in real time.
  • It is integrated with a Global Positioning System (GPS) for route planning and navigation.
  • A music player
  • Features integrated mobile data for text and phone communications.

The magazine Auganix shared a video showing content running on a proprietary OS. It isn’t clear whether LYRA will be pairable with smartphones for possible use on third-party apps. The company hasn’t provided information on the device’s battery life yet. The video of the device released so far indicates fixed UI elements that have not been aligned to real objects and the head movements of the user. They are, thus, more of smart glasses than an augmented reality device.

The design is reportedly sufficiently slim and light that you can wear them the whole day. The image shared shows a slim device although the temples are still quite wide so they are not as inconspicuous as ordinary glasses.

It isn’t clear how comfortable these glasses will be to wear and whether it will be possible to wear them the whole day. Another unknown is whether they can accommodate prescription lenses.

The pre-sale for the LYRA Smart Glasses is set to open in September 2023. For more comprehensive information on these smart glasses, check out the Auganix report.
