IKEA Integrates Its Full 3D Product Catalog in Google Search
IKEA’s full product catalogue is now available in Google Search as Augmented Reality (AR) models.
IKEA has integrated the 3D models of its entire product lineup into Google Search. Users can now search IKEA products on Google and leverage Augmented Reality (AR) to see how these products will actually look in their homes.
The integration adds more than 10,000 3D-enabled IKEA products to Google Search. Before, the AR viewing of the 3D models of IKEA products was only possible via the iOS-exclusive IKEA Place app. The IKEA Place app doesn’t let you view the products in augmented reality.
It isn’t clear when the AR Google Search function was added. Recently, various retailers have been partnering with Google to integrate their inventory lists into Google Search to enable these items to be previewed in 3D before a customer makes a purchase. However, the number of retailers offering a 3D look at their products in Google Search is still small.
Users can access the 3D view of the IKEA products in Google Search by simply typing in the product name. Below the research results, there will be the corresponding IKEA website listing for the product. Below that link, they will see a “View in 3D” button. When the button is tapped, the 3D model of the products opens up in a plain virtual room. There is an option for “View in your space” that enables the user to overlay the 3D product in their real homes. However, the toggle in the IKEA integration is not prominent like the direct integration with the education and augmented reality models. The functionality is, however, similar.
A drawback of the feature is that the “View in 3D” button will only appear when you perform the Google Search using the actual product term rather than generic terms like “IKEA sofa” or “IKEA table”.
True-to-Scale 3D Product Views Might Boost Conversions
IKEA’s 3D models do not have a resize option, unlike Google’s current 3D AR models of objects and animals. Instead, all of IKEA’s products in the 3D catalogue have been shown to scale. As a result, users get a realistic sense of the furniture will fit into their living spaces. 3D product viewing, placement and overlays enable prospective buyers to make prudent buying decisions without having to visit an IKEA store.
There is also IKEA Kreativ which assists users with their shopping. Shoppers can use IKEA Kreativ to scan their rooms and have them spruced up with IKEA furniture. This service is currently only available in the U.S.
IKEA’s 3D product catalogue integration in Google Search will not include its popular IKEA food which is not viewable in Google’s 3D view portal.
The IKEA 3D product catalogue integration even allows you to place items in your vicinity close by so you can see what the items will look like on your premises. If you are planning to place an order, this will save you the time and hassle of having to physically visit the premises.
IKEA has more than 450 stores spread across 53 countries across the globe. Due to its extremely high shipping costs, the ability to view IKEA’s catalogue in 3D and augmented reality in Google Search before buying something could be a convenient money saver for shoppers.
