The much-anticipated Apple mixed reality headset, the Reality Pro, has created a lot of buzz ahead of its unveiling at the WWDC 2023 early next month. However, a recent Wall Street Journal report states that Apple is grappling with production challenges that could affect the launch timeline as well as the availability of the headset this year.

The Apple headset has been undergoing development for the past seven years but The Wall Street Journal report states that Apple is facing challenges in bringing the device to the market. The WSJ report cited supply chain sources that claim that the majority of consumers would not be able to buy the headset until much later in the fall of this year. This would be a considerable delay. An earlier timeline, which coincided with Apple’s usual launch timeline, would have seen the headset being launched just a few weeks after its unveiling at the WWDC.

This a departure from Apple’s usual way of doing things where it avoids discussing its new products until they are ready for shipment. However, the report says Apple boss Tim Cook is keen on releasing the headset, even if that could mean compromising on its perfection. The WSJ reports that the device that will be debuting in June will be a still-experimental mode and that Apple is predicting slower adoption of the device compared to its iPhone and Apple Watch, both of which quickly seeped through the consumer market, becoming must-haves among mainstream buyers.

As Apple works to expedite the product’s launch, WSJ reports that there are some internal concerns in areas such as software integration, production challenges as well as market readiness. These concerns have raised doubts about whether the product might be rolled out in time.

The Wall Street Journal report also confirmed rumors that Apple’s Reality Pro headset will feature a separate battery pack which will be compact in size. This separation of the battery and the headset is also a departure from Apple’s well-established design approach where all the components are integrated within the device.

As a result of the manufacturing delays, the mass production of Apple’s Reality Pro headset is now projected to begin in September. The report states that Apple is targeting shipments of between 200,000 to 300,000 units this year, as earlier predicted by Apple analyst Ming-chi Kuo. According to reports, the headset will cost $3,000 at launch and will likely target the enthusiast market and professional users.
