Virtuix Omni Raises $11 Million From 4,000 Investors for Its Consumer Treadmill
Virtuix launched a crowdfunding campaign five months ago on the equity crowdfunding platform SeedInvest for its consumer product, the Omni One omnidirectional treadmill. Yesterday, Virtuix revealed that its crowdfunding campaign has so far raised $11 million from more than 4,000 backers with one month to go.
The fundraising campaign will end on 2nd April 2021 and Virtuix hopes it will hit its $15 million target by this date.
Virtuix chose SeedInvest instead of the traditional crowdfunding route on the platforms such as Kickstarter. Fundraising through SeedInvest allows Virtuix to sell its shares to the public. The platform has a minimum investment of $1,000 and investors also get a 20% discount as a perk when purchasing the Omni One treadmill which costs $400.
Omni One will be available in two versions in 2021. There is a “dev kit” package that is sold for $995 and which doesn’t include a headset. This package is ideal for both developers and virtual reality fans who already have both a VR headset and a VR-ready PC. The complete Omni One entertainment system that includes an operating software and an all-in-one virtual reality headset retails at $1,995 or can be purchased via a monthly payment plan of $55 per month.
Virtuix CEO Jan Goetgeluk expressed his optimism following the success on SeedInvest and noted that this hinted the strong market demand for Omni One given that many of the new investors participating in the crowdfunding campaign are also eager customers planning to purchase the Omni One treadmill for their homes.
According to Goetgeluk, the company’s product represents a “breakthrough in omnidirectional treadmill technology.” The Omni One system has a compact build at just four feet in diameter. The treadmill is also easy to fold up and easy to store. It offers players “unmatched freedom of movement” including the ability to crouch, kneel and jump.
The Omni One is the company’s first solid play into the consumer market segment as the company has always focused on the location-based entertainment (LBE) sector. The product has been designed to offer a small footprint that’s suited for people’s homes and is set to launch this year with 30 titles that were developed by Virtuix and third-party studios and which will be availed via its dedicated online store.
Apart from Virtuix, another startup providing an omnidirectional treadmill for VR users is KatVR’s Kat Walk C which had a Kickstarter in 2020 and whose device will be retailing at $999 or less.
