Surplex is set to launch a Kickstarter campaign for its tracking shoe product with 480 pressure sensors that track a wearer’s every move.

The virtual reality company Surplex has come up with a new footwear innovation that’s set to replace the requirement for straps and base stations. The footwear is called Full-Body Tracking Shoes.

The shoes are in the form of silver sneakers that are suited for gaming or for just strolling in the metaverse. At the moment, this tracking shoe project is just a Kickstarter campaign although the company says they could potentially be used in 3D animations as well as in the medical field.

Every individual shoe features 240 flexible pressure sensors that work in concert with an inertial measurement unit.

The tracking shoe syncs with the deep learning algorithm in Surplex and track’s the movements of the wearer, then renders them in real-time in virtual reality. Once charged, the shoes will run for up to six hours.

Surplex says the Full-Body Tracking Shoe system is easy to set up. It does not include straps, base stations, or dongles, unlike other cyber shoes that are already on the market.

The Surplex tracking shoes have been built with complex sensors that provide 360-degree coverage, zero blind spots, and zero drifting. The startup released a minute-long video that shows how the shoes’ movements are translated into the rendered virtual reality character. However, the company says its algorithm is still being fine-tuned.

According to founder Axl Chan, Surplex’s strength lies in its self-developed flexible pressure sensors that are positioned under each foot along with its proprietary deep learning algorithms that can accurately infer human 3D skeletons. As a result, the Surplex full-body tracking shoes deliver the most natural and highly accurate mode of interacting with virtual reality worlds, according to the manufacturer. The manufacturer says the shoes will provide “true freedom” in the virtual world.

The Surplex profiles provide additional details on the features that the tracking shoes will have and potential areas of application such as game development, rigging characters in film productions, and much more.

The shoes also have good medical analysis potential. Surplex is also planning to build a public interface for rehab analyses and athletic performance that will give users access to pressure information as well as other kinematic data.

Chan says he came up with the tracking shoe idea to address gaps in the range of interactive tools that are currently available in the market. The Surplex shoes will also have compatibility with various games and apps such as Blade and Sorcery, VRChat, and Neos VR.

The Kickstarter campaign for the Surplex Full-Body Tracking Shoes is set to launch “soon”. The project is still under development so there are no details yet on pricing, release date, or a full list of supported platforms.
