The creator of Oculus VR, Palmer Luckey, spoke to a crowd on Sunday at the annual CG conference Siggraph, along with a few other experts in the virtual reality space, to give their thoughts on the growth of VR.

Luckey claimed the growth in the market is “inevitable”, citing different factors that should happen in the next five years to see spikes in popularity, from hundreds of thousands of fans to millions of fans of VR.

The first spike should be in hardware, the Oculus founder believes multiple brands of VR headsets will pave the way to more acceptance of the new media, similar to opening trends in mobile phones and gaming consoles.

To keep the momentum and build this into a huge market, all of the speakers believe the “killer app” is needed. The killer app would be able to show how virtual reality exceeds what is currently on offer. main image, Oculus

None of the speakers believe Oculus or any other virtual reality headset will be completely video game orientated. Speaking on the subject of movies, experiences and even music, Luckey believes these are things the team will incorporate.

The killer app, in our opinion, would have to be something that consoles and TV cannot achieve. A virtual experience could be the next step, allowing players to step in a new world, without having a set task or goal to move towards.

This sort of no boundaries exploration could do wonders for people who just want to waste a few hours. In the future, developers might even expand on these experiences with goals, tasks and challenges.

There are still leaps to go before virtual reality is seen as the new front in entertainment, Henry Fuchs claimed that most of the components inside the headset are inadequate and the display is woefully inadequate, alongside pitiful tracking.

Thankfully, these are all issues that can be sorted out through iterations of change, something Oculus is committed to achieving.
