List of Social VR Apps and Projects
The age of communications has brought us many interesting apps to connect with our friends and family. First, it was Facebook, then Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp, and all kinds of ways to communicate and share with everyone. But as we move forward into easier ways to communicate, we lose touch and closeness. The young generation is even afraid of answering a simple phone call because it has become awkward and somehow outdated to them.
Virtual Reality may not bring people together in the real world but it can certainly bring people closer than they are. As VR headsets are becoming a mainstream gadget, we may soon be watching new and more interesting ways to communicate with each other using Social Virtual Reality Apps.
Virtual Worlds and Social VR
Many VR startups and even tech giants have been developing new and creative technologies that can be incorporated into current and future social VR applications. Facial and gestures recognition, body tracking, eye tracking, hand tracking, and even heartbeats sensors could be incorporated into these social platforms. Who is going to be the Facebook of Virtual Reality? Maybe Facebook itself with its Oculus Rooms? Who are the other competitors? We show you:
AltspaceVR
AltspaceVR is a place to meet up with friends or family, you can play games like Boss Monster and DnD, and attend all kinds of events. You can also create your own events for the community or just for your family and close friends. Host a tech talk, philosophy meetup, game, or simply watch a movie. The possibilities are endless.
High Fidelity
High Fidelity allows you to use common formats, tools, and languages to generate complex interactive experiences, share processing power among different users and scale to thousands of people and petabytes of data in a single space. The result is a virtual world made up of thousands of people all over the world.
SpatialOS Improbable
With SpatialOS people can create a swarm of hundreds of conventional game engines that overlap together to create a huge, seamless world. You can develop without worrying about the computational and concurrent player limitations of a single engine. A SpatialOS world can contain millions of persistent entities and can also manage their state and history. Design gameplays that enable players to affect the world in significant, long-lasting ways.
Oculus Rooms
Oculus Rooms is a private virtual space where you can spend time with your friends and family in Virtual Reality. They focus on enabling social activities that replicate how you may hang out with your close ones in real life. You can choose whatever you want to do: play matching or guessing games, gather around the TV and watch videos, or hit the group app launcher to jump to a multiplayer game like Drop Dead or Dragon Front. Look for even more apps to support this feature in the near future.
Project Sansar
Sansar is being developed by Linden Lab, the same people behind Second Life, it is a new platform for creating social Virtual Reality experiences. Sansar intends to democratize VR as a creative medium, so it would make it easier for people to create, share, and monetize their social experiences in Virtual Reality, Sansar is now available for creators by invitation only but it will release to the public in the next coming months. To apply for an invitation to the Creator Preview, visit Sansar.com.
TheWaveVR
TheWaveVR is a virtual reality experience that allows people to connect around music. You can step into this virtual environment and meet all sorts of new people or hang out with your friends while a DJ entertains everyone with an astonishing audio and visual experience. Everything in The WaveVR reacts to audio and this allows a deeper connection with the DJ and all the people around you.
VRChat
