AMD Invests in Wireless VR Technology
AMD acquired key engineering talent and intellectual property from Nitero, which develops millimeter wave solutions that will allow wireless AR and VR headsets.
AMD Believes in a Future with Wireless VR Headsets
The new acquisition provides AMD with a larger portfolio of intellectual property that will provide VR headset and solution providers with the technology required to develop even more immersive experiences.
“Unwieldy headset cables remain a significant barrier to driving widespread adoption of VR,” said Mark Papermaster, AMD chief technology officer, and senior vice president. “Our newly acquired wireless VR technology is focused on solving this challenge, and is another example of AMD making long-term technology investments to develop high-performance computing and graphics technologies that can create more immersive computing experiences.”
Nitero has designed something they call “phased-array beamforming millimeter wave chip,” which in English translates to “chips”, these are intended to address the challenges of wireless Virtual Reality. This technology allows low-latency multi-gigabit transmit performance in room-scale VR environments.
“Our world-class engineering team has been focused on solving the difficult problem of building wireless VR technologies that can be integrated into next-generation headsets,” said Nitero co-founder and CEO Pat Kelly who has joined AMD as corporate vice president, Wireless IP. “We are excited to play a role in furthering AMD’s long-term technology vision.”
By improving this technology, AMD intends to completely remove wires from VR headsets. Higher processing power and faster wireless data transmission are essential to more immersive Virtual Reality experiences with no need for wires and bulky headsets.
