Augmented reality startup Magic Leap is currently looking for blockchain technology engineers to help it secure and store some of its user data according to a recent job listing on the employment site Greenhouse and listings on other job websites. The company plans to hire a senior blockchain architect along with multiple blockchain engineers.

The senior blockchain architect will be charged with the “planning and execution of a portfolio of blockchain, smart contract and Ricardian contract technologies” that will help support Magic Leap’s implementation of its Lifestream business function. The holder of the position will also be charged with helping develop the startup’s “overall blockchain ecosystem engagement strategy” according to information on the job posting.

From the job listing, Magic Leap is looking for someone that has experience with both the Red Belly and Hyperledger blockchain frameworks. The individual must also have experience with Node.js, Java, Python or Go. Magic Leap will also require that the blockchain engineer have experience in writing smart contracts for blockchain networks such as Hyperledger, Corda, Hyperledger Fabric, Ethereum and Sawtooth.

Lifestream is Magic Leap’s planned repository for user data, something the startup has said will encompass all the data that users experience as well as all the data of the world around them. Magic Leap has also stated that Lifestream will be an incredibly important data set and sees the critical importance of protecting the data set using the most fool-proof systems available. The company is therefore looking for the most novel data storage approaches that will ensure the integrity of its data set and blockchain technology has come in handy for this application. Magic Leap has also intimated its need to offer users both tools and security and make its offering “a distributed thing” that gives users as much control as possible. Magic Leap wants Lifestream to be a data set that users have like in blockchain networks rather than something that is centralized like the old computing systems. All of this points to the startup favoring a distributed approach similar to what has been implemented in systems in the recent past with blockchain technology and smart contracts.

Magic Leap executives frequently talk of the need to implement a vision of augmented reality that will transcend the capabilities of its current device. The Magic Leap headset still has a limited range of use and is primarily restricted to indoor usage. The augmented reality startup eventually wants to realize a vision where users are empowered to access city-wide augmented reality data layers while also being able to capture data on a massive scale.

While Magic Leap is talking of implementing blockchain technology that will ensure the privacy of the individual end users, the AR startup is also leveraging this deployment with an eye on the enterprise market. Some of the data that will be captured on Magic Leap’s augmented reality devices will likely be of very sensitive nature and will include location data and detailed floor plans of various buildings including factories, office and movie theaters.

Augmented reality headset manufacturers have focused their efforts primarily on the headset sales for enterprise users with the specs and prices to match. As a result, many AR headsets have largely been priced out of reach for the average consumer. The other major player in the market, Microsoft, has also focused on the enterprise market since 2016 when it launched its first AR device. However, Microsoft has hinted in the recent months that it may ultimately consumers with its AR products.
