Spotify joins a growing list of augmented reality apps on the Magic Leap One AR headset. The developer edition of the augmented reality glasses was first released last year for a price of $2,295. Some of these apps and games include Star Wars: Project Porg, CNN, Angry Birds: First Person Slingshot, NBA and the Cheddar news network among others. The Spotify app will be the first music streaming app for the Magic Leap One headset.

The Magic Leap One headset features small built-in speakers that are positioned near the user’s ears. However, there is a jack through which you can plug in your headphones. Magic Leap also incorporated a background music function, an ability for the AR headsets to play music in the background as the wearer is using other apps. The Spotify AR app is the first on the Magic Leap One platform that leverages this functionality.

Spotify Magic Leap One app will also works just as the smartphone app, enabling users to start their music selection through the Spotify smartphone app that can be connected to the Magic Leap One headset through Bluetooth. Premium users will be able to search for music, create their playlists and starts song with the slightly adapted 3D interface.

One special feature of the app is that it is possible to assign individual artists, playlists and albums to locations. Chill-out sounds can also be transferred to the user’s living room couch or Rock ‘n Roll into the bedroom or even bathroom thanks to the Magic Leap space-tracking. The sounds will come from either the headset speakers or optional connected headphones.

The new announcement has arrived just a few days after reports emerged that Magic Leap will be embarking on another major funding round. The AR startup has also stated that it is working on expanding both its content and developer ecosystem while also developing a second-generation Magic Leap device.
