An upgrade adds support for Index Controllers and Steam VR to the Panasonic MeganeX VR headset.

The slim and lightweight MeganeX PC VR headset was launched by Shiftall, a Panasonic subsidiary. It features micro-OLED displays (measuring 1.3inches/3.3cm). It is also equipped with plastic pancake lenses by Kopin that give the headset a more compact form factor and a light weight of just about 250 grams.

The MeganeX headset has some impressive specifications with a resolution of 2,560 by 2,560 pixels per eye along with a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz. The headset also features HDR capability with a 30-bit color depth. Users can not only adjust its lens distance but also its visual acuity.

The MeganeX headset has also begun running with the Valve Index controllers. When it was unveiled, there was still a little fog over whether the manufacturer, Shiftall, planned to build the headset as a standalone device or as one that would be docked with an existing ecosystem. A new prototype now suggests the latter. The company is showcasing a Lighthouse adapter used for external SteamVR tracking just like in the Valve Index or HTC Vive headsets.

The manufacturer has also confirmed that the headset will support Valve Index controllers. This will make it compatible with other accessories found in the SteamVR ecosystem like the Valve Trackers and the Tundra trackers used for body tracking.

The image in the first video snippet still appears to be shaky because it is an unfiltered signal that hasn’t undergone post-processing. Additionally, the prototype of the Lighthouse extension shows exposed sensors. These will likely be subject to change in the production-ready version of the headset. From the photo, the Panasonic headset looks a bit bulky. However, the manufacturer says it weighs only 68 grams.

Native PC VR Connection

Shiftall is also planning a native PC VR connection through a Displayport. This will be done an included converter box consisting of DP + USB 2.0 to USB Type-C.

There aren’t plans for face ad eye tracking at the moment. In a Twitter post, the company stated that that there could be a corresponding connection for the USB-C port at some point in the future.

The MeganeX headset runs on the Snapdragon XR1 chip, just like the HTC Vive Flow which will handle tasks such as the headset’s inside-out tracking. The MeganeX headset still has to be connected to a PC player through a cable that provides both computing power and the energy.

The current MeganbeX headset will be unveiled in greater detail at the AWE Europ 2022 conference taking place in Lisbon from October 20 to 21. Shiftall may also announce the headset’s use cases and release date at the event. The headset was originally scheduled for a global launch in the Spring of 2022 for under $900.
