Oculus Reveals New VR Headset Prototype: Crescent Bay
Oculus VR has unveiled a latest prototype named Crescent Bay at the Oculus Connect developer conference in Hollywood, CA. The prototype is yet another leap for the company and it won’t be long before Oculus Rift will be releasing a consumer version of its virtual reality headset to the public.
The CEO of Oculus VR, Brendan Iribe mentioned that Crescent Bay is a vast improvement over the older Oculus Rift kits, DK1 and DK2. The device is loaded with amazing new features. Crescent Bay is equipped with 360-degree tracking that enables the external camera on the Rift to track both the back and front of the headset. With such a great range of movement, the headset does not constrain people. It exhibits higher resolution and refresh rate. Furthermore, the headset is lighter in weight and user friendly. Iribe also revealed that the new VR device has integrated headphones for the very first time! Prior to Crescent Bay, Oculus VR never indulged in 3D audio but now it is one of the most important features of the prototype. According to Iribe, the audio integration will make the virtual reality far more immersive, sustainable and comfortable. The company is keeping the screen resolution, refresh rate and latency remain a secret.
The Crescent Bay prototype was available for demos and try outs at Oculus Connect. According to the people who tried it, the virtual experience with Crescent Bay was absolutely incredible and realistic. The prototype is comfortable to use and is a big step up from the older DK2 version. Some of the experiences included Trex, Raptor, mirror face mask, miniature cities, and polygon art camping, calibration wall of speakers, submarine interior and an epic battle ending.
Even though the latest Rift is better than ever, it does have some software flaws but this is to be expected. During the trials, there were times when the audio did not quite follow the head tracking. Sometimes, the audio got completely cut off when somebody turned their head. There are a handful of shortcomings and imperfections that the company will eventually work out. Once perfected, Crescent Bay might just be the next big thing.
