Asunder: Earthbound on Oculus Rift
In the previous year, a small virtual reality version for the Oculus Rift headset was revealed by an indie developer known as “Aldin Dynamics”.
The engine was named “Asunder: Earthbound” and gained instant stardom status at the time of release, for two main reasons: One was the lack of well made virtual reality experiences at the time, which made Asunder: Earthbound stand out from the competition. The second reason was the completely immersive way of showcasing technology in the game. At the time of release, Asunder: Earthbound could only be used with the first development kit created by Oculus Rift (DK1). Now, the game has been given an extremely important update which was long overdue. The update received by Asunder: Earthbound has been added an entire year later but makes it compatible with the second development kit of Oculus Rift (DK2).
There have been a lot of visual changes added to Asunder: Earthbound, small but crucial to the overall feel of the game. There are many important tweaks and mini-experiences that have received a change. The developing team has claimed that the game is a ‘cinematic virtual reality experience’, which is basically about players being set into a scene which makes them become passengers on a plane. It is a survival game, based on strategy which shows the players a series of strange events occurring not long after they sit on the plane. The players must then figure out ways to extricate themselves from the weird situations and learn to survive aboard the plane with a limited number of supplies. With the use of Oculus Rift’s new head tracking technology, it is also possible to have a communicative relationship with other passengers traveling with the player.
To allow low latency head tracking, the second development kit by Oculus Rift (DK2) has been given a 1080p OLED display. Players virtually moving their heads can easily use the positional tracking technology to incorporate their physical moves into the game itself. The newest prototype of Oculus Rift’s virtual reality headset (known as Crescent Bay) further improves Asunder: Earthbound with reference to graphics, audio and general game play.
The updated version of Asunder: Earthbound can be downloaded from the official website, for $4.99. Aldin Dynamics has developed a lot of mini-experiences which have also been added to the download package for further incentive. Virtual Reality Times will keep following the progress of Asunder: Earthbound and report back with any further updates.
