Figment VR Is an iPhone Case and a VR Viewer in One
Virtual reality is taking a slow yet sure pace towards mainstream adoption. Along with this revolution, VR carries the ability to offer immersive 360-degree content while on the go. Thanks to the affordable VR brought about by Google Cardboard, many other VR startups have spent efforts to ride the cheap VR bandwagon. Cardboard offers a cost-effective way for users to experience VR on the go, but it doesn’t cut it when it comes to portability. A recent Kickstarter campaign aims to solve the problem of portability in an affordable VR headset by consolidating this essential function into a phone case.
Conceptualized and launched by Quantum Bakery as a Kickstarter project, Figment VR is a VR viewer that is also essentially a smartphone case. In just a simple pull of a trigger, a pair of built-in VR goggles is revealed from the case’s rear side which provides the on-the-go VR viewing experience for iPhone users. The case is made from almost 30 unique parts, each made of either durable plastic or 6000 series aluminum. Boasting a clean, industrial design, Figment VR offers a premium feel for a cheap VR experience.
The slick-looking, soft touch-coated Figment VR viewer will be available for Apple’s new iPhone models, including iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6S, and iPhone 6S Plus. The retail cost of the Figment VR viewer will be $79 when it officially becomes a retail staple. However, some early backers of the device on Kickstarter can avail an early bird offer by pledging $49. The Figment VR viewer is available in two colors: black, and white.
Out-of-the-box support for third-party VR apps will be a highlight of Figment VR. The iPhone case-VR viewer combo will be supporting a variety of VR-friendly apps, such as Google Cardboard, Jaunt VR, and VRSE. In addition, the device will also work with the 360-degree videos found on YouTube and Facebook sites.
