Facebook Closed 200 Oculus VR Demo Locations
Facebook closes 200 of its 500 Oculus Rift Test Stations located in numerous Best Buy Stores in the United States. The reason is reportedly a less than anticipated interest from the public in trying the Oculus Rift VR headset.
Best Buy and Oculus: Temporary Setback or Bad Marketing Strategy?
Oculus did not say exactly why the change of strategy, but media outlets report that some Best Buy Stores located far from the cities had days without a single Oculus Rift demonstration, so customers were either too intimidated or unfamiliar with the VR headset.
“We’re making some seasonal changes and prioritizing demos at hundreds of Best Buy locations in larger markets. You can still request Rift demos at hundreds of Best Buy stores in the US and Canada.”
Said Andrea Schubert, Oculus spokeswoman, while confirming the closures.
Facebook started this marketing strategy last May with only 48 Best Buys stores where people could try the VR headset and buy it. As it was an initial success, the company expanded the demonstrations to 500 stores all over the USA. It is said that the actual idea was not to sell the VR headsets but to promote them and make people talk about the Oculus Rift. From that point of view, Facebook’s strategy was mostly successful.
We don’t know exactly why the sudden change of strategy and some people are already overreacting with the news, but one thing is for sure, Facebook wasn’t born yesterday. The Virtual Reality industry is growing and Oculus Rift is doing pretty well. If one only marketing campaign didn’t work, I’m pretty sure Facebook can afford it and lose a few thousand while it keeps earning millions by the day.
Virtual Reality is a reality now and tech giants like Facebook, Samsung, Google, HTC, and Valve can’t all be wrong about it.
