As part of a pilot education program, Oculus will deploy 100 Oculus Rifts in 90 different libraries across the state of California over the next three months.

The program includes Oculus Rift and Touch controllers so anyone can use their hands in a variety of VR applications for free in their nearest library. VR apps available for visitors include Star Chart, Guided Meditation VR, The Body VR, Ocean Rift, Everest, Titans of Space 2.0, Apollo 11, Google Earth, and many others. The pilot program will also include projects from Oculus Story Studio such as Henry, Lost, and Dear Angelica.
This project is a partnership between Oculus and the California State Library, it involves 100 Oculus Rifts and Oculus Ready PCs located in 90 Californian libraries that will allow even more people to be a part of the Virtual Reality revolution.
“It’s pretty cool to imagine how many people will try VR for the very first time—and have that ‘wow’ moment—in their local libraries,” says Oculus Education Program Manager Cindy Ball. “We hope early access will cause many people to feel excited and empowered to move beyond just experiencing VR and open their minds to the possibility of one day joining the industry.”
The main goal is supporting equitable access to new and emerging technology, one that has the potential to immerse users in ways that no other method can. This program has strong possibilities for future expansion within the state and it might even be replicated outside of California. Let’s cross our fingers.
