Oculus Quest 2 Multi-User Accounts and App Sharing Begin Rolling Out
Last month, Facebook announced that it would be rolling out two new features that have been the most requested from the Oculus community: multi-user accounts and app sharing.
Multi-user accounts enable multiple accounts to log into one headset. The two features enable a primary account holder to create up to three secondary accounts to their virtual reality headset and share the apps that they have purchased with these secondary accounts. The feature allows for safe sharing but the game progress and achievements will be personalized and saved separately for every account.
In January this year, Facebook had announced that the two features would be rolled out in February and would initially be available as experimental functions of the Quest 2 headset and finally, to all other Quest owners at a later date.
On February 18th, app sharing and multi-user accounts began rolling out as experimental features for Oculus Quest 2. The announcement was made via the Oculus blog. Users of the original Quest headset will have access to these new features at a later date.
The Oculus Quest headset has become a shared device for many users and the new features now make it easier for users, particularly in a shared environment such as in a household, to share their Quest headsets. Facebook has already provided an extensive explanation of how app sharing and multi-user accounts work.
Facebook’s blog last week included two new pieces of information: –
- You will be able to protect your user account from unauthorized access by using the unlock pattern.
- The secondary user accounts work more extensively than Facebook previously stated. Apart from the game progression and achievements, secondary user accounts also their own friend lists, browser search histories and privacy settings.
The app sharing functionality was effective immediately from mid February for all new apps in the Quest Store. Some of the older games don’t support the feature yet and it has to be implemented manually by the developers.
You can now let others use your Quest headset and try out the various VR experiences without necessarily giving them an unrestricted access to your account details and your hard-won game scores.
The Multi-User and App Sharing functionalities enable owners to log multiple accounts into one virtual reality headset and share the Oculus Store apps that they have purchased with these additional accounts (secondary accounts). With app sharing, the game progress and achievements are unique to every account. The owner can also maintain their own friend lists, browser history, privacy settings and much more and are even able to lock the account using an unlock pattern before they hand over the headset to other users such as friends and family (the secondary accounts).
