Meta has slashed the price of its standalone Quest 2 VR headset to $250 in a promotion that will run until December 31st.

The new discounted pricing is available on the Meta Quest Store as well as in its supported retail outlets. The 128Gb model of the entry-level VR headset will now retail at $250, from $300. The 256GB headset will retail at $300 from $350.

The Meta Quest 2 headset has been around for the past three years and is the most popular headset at the moment, commanding a dominant market share. The base model saw its storage increase to 128GB but prices for that and the 256GB model were raised to $400 and $500 respectively last year. The price increase led to a sudden drop in sales which forced Meta to further drop the prices.

In March year, the price for the 256GB model of the Quest 2 headset dropped from $500 to $430. Later on in June, during the unveiling of the Meta Quest 3 headset, Meta slashed the price of the 128GB model to $300 while that of the 256GB model was further slashed to $350, below its launch price.

With the latest price of just $250, the Meta Quest 2 headset now costs just half the price of the Meta Quest 3 headset, with similar storage.

Is the Meta Quest 2 Headset a Good Investment in 2023?

The headset has been around for the past three years and according to a leaked Meta roadmap, the company is planning to release a successor to the Meta Quest 3 in 2024. The new headset will retail at “the most attractive price point in the VR consumer market” according to the report. Major publications including Bloomberg, The Wall Street Journal along with a leading Chinese XR analyst have also reported that the 2024 headset will replace the Meta Quest 2 in the consumer market segment. It will also be powered by the new Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chipset that is in the Quest 3 headset.

XR2 Gen 2 chip offers a GPU that is twice as powerful, and it is already being used by some developers in realizing dramatically improved “console quality” graphics. With both the Quest 3 and its successor headset set to gradually transition the active user base from the standalone virtual reality market to the new XR2 Gen2 chip, developers will likely focus less on building good games for the Meta Quest 2 headset.

However, if you are keen to get a good headset this year at affordable pricing, the $250 Quest 2 promo is good value for money. The Quest 2 headset still plays the same games that will be available in its successor in 2024. And $250 is quite a steal for a non-refurbished standalone virtual reality headset that comes with tracked controllers.
