Beat Saber Getting a Level Editor and Leaving Early Access Next Week
Beat Saber has already seen considerable success over the past year, including being a breakout VR hit and the virtual reality game is still only in Early Access. Now the game developer, Beat Games, is about to pull off another step by moving out of the early access next week for the PC VR devices.
Beat Games has announced it will be pushing the game into a proper 1.0 release with launch also coming with the much-awaited level editor feature that will enable players to lay their own tracks for their own music.
The level editor in Beat Saber will be 2D and will be a fairly simple feature. The developer says that it was not an afterthought and was planned right from the beginning but the company waited in order to figure out the best solution. The “Beat Saber” track that was in the previous OST will be included in the release as a default track for free so as to enable players to play around with the level editor before they begin importing their own tracks.
PC VR players are already able to make their own tracks by using the unofficial mod support. However, with the level editor, players will for the first time be able to make their own tracks inside the Beat Saber videogame.
In a post on Medium, Beat Games has explained that the level editor feature took long to come because the team still hadn’t figured out how they would incorporate other audio files with their Level Editor. The team discussed this and tried to devise the best solution possible. Originally, the team had wanted to release the Level Editor as soon as it has released the PC-based version of the game. However, the team decided to postpone this for some time and work on other projects since it hadn’t figured the best way to implement this yet.
Now Beat Games has the solution and it feels “ready and prepared” to launch this next week. The Level Editor will be 2D and will be a simple feature, as originally planned. The release of the Level Editor will enable players to create levels for their own audio tracks. As stated, the song Beat Saber from the OST Vol 1 will be included as a free default track that all players can have fun with before they import their own songs.
The fully finalized game will launch on May 21, on the same day that the Oculus Quest headset launches. This launch will also unify all the Beat Saber versions in various portals including those on Oculus Store, Steam and PlayStation VR. With the full launch, the price will also rise from the current $19.99 to $29.99 on all platforms.
This won’t be the last of the Beat Saber updates. Expect to see additional premium and free music tracks from some of the big-name artists. Beat Games devs also have more ideas for additional features and have more promised future updates.
