Oculus Rift Headset

Atlantic Productions, a British production company, has decided to use Oculus Virtual Reality (VR) for their next project: Sir David Attenborough’s nature documentary titled Conquest of the Skies. Sir David Attenborough is a renowned English broadcaster and naturalist with over 6 decades of experience in the film industry. He is currently writing a new project that is going to be especially filmed for the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. The upcoming Rift for the documentary is being developed by the Oculus VR, an American virtual reality technology company acquired by Facebook in March 2014. The Oculus VR device holds a promise of an exciting 3D adrenaline filled venture by offering its viewers a complete three hundred and sixty degree experience and absolute digital immersion.

The filming of documentary is currently in progress in Borneo and other locations with an eight-camera rig that can capture a full 360 degree image. John Morris, the commercial director for Atlantic Productions, told realscreen at MIPTV in Cannes that their company has already acquired several Oculus VR kits and Conquest of the Skies will be their very first production to be made in high-end world of virtual reality.

“We’re now filming for the Oculus Rift,” Morris said in his interview with realscreen, “so when we filmed our recent flight in Borneo, we filmed with an eight-camera rig, so you got the full 360 degree experience.”

Moreover, Morris explained that they are quite excited about the project as there are no boundaries for what a non-fiction experience would be like on a totally new creative platform. Morris also mentioned that he sees the virtual reality as “a new platform you can monetize,” and that “we’ll see million of these thing being sold.”

In the recent past, Colossus Productions which is a joint venture between Atlantic Productions and Sky for high end 3D production and innovation has already created several natural history productions with different platforms such as TV, 3D, theatrical and giant screen. Some of those productions such as Flying Monsters 3D and The Bachelor King 3D are airing across a variety of multiple formats.
