Unfortunate Japanese Breast Grabbing App Made for Oculus Rift
A new low has been reached in developing new uses for the Oculus Rift, as highly reported in the media, such as this article in Gizmodo: http://gizmodo.com/the-sad-inevitable-oculus-rift-boob-grabbing-game-is-h-1633685069
A developer has once again cobbled together a variety of technologies, to make perhaps the stupidest “sex app” ever created for the Oculus Rift: a breast-grabbing simulator.
Most Westerners reading about this must be quite mystified why someone would go to so much trouble to create something like this, but as it turns out, there could be quite a market for such things in Japan, given that hundreds of thousands, or perhaps millions of young men have been reported to be dropping out of society and becoming addicted to “virtual girlfriends”, online porn, etc. Dubbed “soshoku danshi” which means “grass-eaters/herbivores” by the Japanese media, these young men express little interest in developing real interest in real women, or in pursuing the standard Japanese “factory men” lifestyle of life-long dedication to a single company.
This tit-squeezing “game” is disturbing on many levels, because the basic premise seems to be a simulation in violating an unwilling girl’s body. While one could imagine that there are definitely perverts out there who would get a thrill out of such as thing, it’s hard to believe that one of the first sexual simulations for virtual reality would be geared solely towards something that is universally considered to not just be immoral, but illegal.
The creators at Oculus have said that they don’t intend to censor or control their technology, but one has to wonder if too many things like this come out, they may change their minds. After all, Second Life let things go unchecked in their virtual world, and after a few years, their universe became so filled with “adult content” (to put it mildly) that they changed their minds and changed their setup to relegate all the virtual porn to a red-light district that was more easily controlled.
As it always the case with the media, anything titillating, disturbing, or fear/anger-inducing is certain to be heavily reported, in order to generate clicks and eyeball time on web pages. So, at some point will the Oculus folks decide to start controlling how their technology is used in order to help control the dialogue about their product? Sadly, this would crush the dreams of so many “soshoku danshi” in Japan who are now waiting for this new technology to finally give them the perfect virtual girlfriend.
So while many in the United States see our culture and society as rapidly going down the tubes, perhaps it’s a little heartening to know that Japan is going down faster.
