Following a new Quest update, known as Update 11.0, headset owners will soon be able to select between virtual home environments. The changes are expected to take place “in the coming weeks” and they will enable Quest users to have replaceable home environments as well as new launch environments.

The Oculus Go headset runs the same operating system as the Oculus Quest headset and it has provided users with switchable environments since it was launched. Oculus Go offers owners a limited number of 360-degree images in the startup environment. An Oculus Go user can choose between various environments including a cityscape, grand canyon, nebula and much more. These environments are, however, only in the form of immersive spherical images and not 3D environments.

The Oculus Rift users start from Oculus Home in Virtual Reality, a space that users can set up to their liking and where they can hang out with other Oculus Rift users as well as friends. On the other hand, Oculus Quest has a third variant of the Start Environment which entails a freely accessible geodesic dome that is made of wood and which provides users with a nocturnal landscape as well as northern lights.

Oculus Quest has positional tracking so it leverages the real-time environment which consists of the wooden dome in a forest during the night time. There is also the aurora borealis which can be seen from the outside.

The wooden dome is what the user sees when they wear their headsets. It is also the default environment where they are returned to whenever they close a piece of software. Before the current update, this wooden dome has been the only option.

Following the update, Oculus Quest users will now have the opportunity to load up other startup environments in the settings in the coming weeks. It is not yet known how many of these environments will now be available with the update and what they will constitute. However, future updates will always bring more launch environments.

The original Oculus Rift only provided two environments with the second one having been added via a post-launch update. Oculus Go headset provides ten environments.

In the Environments changelog section, you can see a notice that stating that the feature will be rolled out gradually over the coming weeks in order to ensure optimal quality as well as stability. After the feature has been fully rolled out, users can look forward to extra environment options that will be launched in future releases. This message suggests that Facebook plans to further expand the Quest’s Home feature. It might eventually become more social like the Oculus Rift’s Home where owners can view the avatars of their current party and invite friends to visit. However, such a feature could also conflict with the Facebook’s upcoming ‘Horizon’ metaverse. Taking into account Facebook’s strategy changes on the platform-level apps, particularly on the social space, it is conceivable that Horizon could even replace the Home on both Rift and Quest in the not-so-distant future.

New Experiments

The new 11.0 update for Oculus Quest comes with some other features. As Facebook launches the new software in its devices in the coming days, most of the headsets will update automatically. After they have updated, the headset will also complete downloading and installing the apps before going to sleep. Facebook has also added various opt-in beta features (‘experiments’) which include the following:-

  • Achievements in VR: Owners can see achievements from friends including new levels, trophies and in many more, in games.
  • New High Score Shelf in VR (Beat Saber): You will be able to see high scores from friends in the virtual reality Feed when you are playing Beat Saber.
  • Personalization in VR: Users are able to hide or favorite apps/genres that ends up boosting or removing them from the Explore Feed.
