New Google Lens Features for Search, Shopping and Education Unveiled
Google Lens is set to get new shopping, education and search. What do these new functions entail?
During the Search On 2020 event late last week, Google announced new Google Lens features that should come in handy in Search, Shopping and Educational use-cases.
Google Lens is Google’s AI image analysis tool that enables you to search what you are seeing when using your camera. Google Lens is now able to recognize up to 15 billion objects. Just two years ago, it could only recognize a billion things. You can use Google Lens to identify plants, landmarks, animals and much more.
Google Lens is now set to get new functions for its image analysis AI on Lens. If you are learning a new language, the Lens now translates into more than 100 languages. Among other things, there is a reading function that helps users learn the correct pronunciation when translating from foreign languages by simply tapping to hear the words and sentences being pronounced aloud.
A Visual Tool to Help with Your Homework
The search bar in the Google app enables you to use the Lens for your homework problems. This features step-by-step guides as well as videos with which users can learn and understand the functional concepts that will enable them to solve problems in various subjects including biology, math, chemistry and physics.
These new Augmented Reality tools will bring hands-on learning into the home and enable learners to explore various concepts up close within their personal space. They will be able to use the Lens “Homework” feature to, for instance, visualize the inner workings of the periodic table or plant cells in 3D.
Users can also visualize chemical compounds or biological processes with Lens in Augmented Reality. Such realistic rendering of complex subjects in AR can radically speed up a user’s understanding of complex subjects. You can find the technical requirements for the 3D search on Google’s support website.
Shopping with Google Lens
Google Lens also comes in handy in the shopping use-cases. It is particularly important when you are unable to describe what you are seeing in words. Using Google Lens, you can already search for a product by taking photos or screenshots of the item. With the new features, it is now even easier to discover new products when you are browsing online using your phone. When you tap and hold a photo or a screenshot on the Google app or using Chrome on Android, Lens’ image analysis AI searches and finds exact similar items and even suggests for you ways in which you can style it. This feature is also set to launch soon on the Google app on iOS.
Google Lens leverages the Style Engine technology that merges the world’s largest database of products with millions of style images. Next, it pattern matches in order to make sense of concepts such as “vintage denim” or “ruffle sleeves” and how these pair up with different types of apparel.
An AR Showroom with Google Lens
One of the most commonplace uses of AR in the retail arena has been in AR product visualization where a user is able to render a product in their space in 3D without actually visiting the physical product showroom. This is also possible with Google Lens which allows you to view a product up close in your environment, literally bringing the retail showroom into your personal space or environment.
With the new features, for example, you will soon be able to search for a car model and view an AR model of the vehicle right in front of you. It will be possible for you to see what the car looks like in various colors and even zoom in to see the tiniest of details in the car such as the buttons in the dashboard. You can also superimpose the car against various beautiful backdrops or even on your driveway. Google is already experimenting with this functionality in the U.S. market and working with top car manufacturers such as Porsche and Volvo. This will allow prospective buyers to soon configure details of the vehicle such as its color and equipment and view it in Augmented Reality.
