Capcom revealed last week that’s horror classic Resident Evil 4 (2005) is coming to Oculus Quest 2. The VR remaster of the title has been published in partnership with Oculus Studios. However, while the game will be released for Quest 2, it will not be compatible with the original Oculus Quest.

The title is coming to Oculus Quest 2 with the help of Armature Studio which also worked on other Oculus Studios titles like Fail Factory! and Sports Scramble for Quest. The developer has also done other non-VR games and port projects.

Resident Evil 4 was first launched on Gamecube in 2005 and is one of Capcom’s best-selling games. The title has been ported to Xbox 360, PS2, PS3, PS4, PC, Wii and Xbox One. It has sold 10.6 million units across platforms, Capcom revealed.

Resident Evil made the over-the-shoulder third-person camera view widely popular and the format has since been used by numerous other horror and shooter games. In Resident Evil 4, it shoves aside that legacy as this VR title will be played in first-person. It has also been rebuilt while factoring in VR-specific interactions. Facebook Reality Labs VP of Content Mike Verdu said that the title will combine the immersion of a first-person perspective, Touch controllers as well a technical ingenuity that will bring a new depth to the Resident Evil gameplay.

Resident Evil 4 will also be an Oculus Quest 2 exclusive and will not be compatible with the original Quest headset unlike other titles on the Quest platform. The original Quest headset is just two years old but it has an outdated processor and there is a challenge with cramming Resident Evil 4 into its processor. The Quest 2 headset has a more powerful processor. This likely explains why the title was kept exclusive to the Quest 2 headset. However, there are still millions of users with the original Quest headset and the decision to exclude the title from the headset will likely upset many who may feel they are being sidelined too soon following the launch of the Quest 2 headset.

Resident Evil 4 VR isn’t the first Capcom title to make its way into virtual reality. In 2017, its more modern version, the Resident Evil 7, was launched with an optional VR version. It is regarded as one of the best games of the VR headset. Although Resident Evil 7 was also launched on PC, its virtual reality mode remained exclusive to PSVR.

Oculus has promised to share more on the Resident Evil 4 VR in next week’s Oculus Gaming Showcase to be held on April 21st.
