In an investor event this week, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon claimed that its partnership with Meta (previously Facebook) had yielded more than 10 million Oculus Quest units shipments since the headset’s launch in October 2020.

It is generally accepted the Meta’s Quest 2 headset has done incredibly well but the company has been mum about its sales stats and it hasn’t been quite apparent the kind of impact that headset has had on the industry at large. Now Qualcomm has cleared the air and quantified Quest 2’s success. Although Qualcomm later backtracked on the claim, it is now understood that the company is doing so  because Meta would rather keep this information secret and that Qualcomm is right on the mark as they make the Snapdragon chips that run the headset anyway.

Amon said that Quest 2’s success had an impact on Qualcomm, the company supplying the Snapdragon XR2 chips that it runs on.

Qualcomm is closely partnering with Meta and supplies the Snapdragon XR2 chipset that powers the Oculus Quest 2 headset. The company also supplies the Snapdragon 835 chipset that drives the original Oculus Quest headset from 2019. Apart from Meta, it is the only company likely to have accurate Quest sales data.

If the 10 million shipments figure is true, it would be a huge milestone for Meta. During the (Oculus) Connect 2018. Mark Zuckerberg had cited the 10 million figure for a single platform as the user threshold needed to create a sustainable ecosystem for virtual reality developers. Now Meta’s Quest 2 alone appears to have crossed that threshold.

Zuckerberg described 10 million users as the threshold where the number of VR users and VR content buyers would be “sustainable and profitable for all kinds of developers.” Zuckerberg explained that once that threshold was crossed, then the content and the ecosystem would simply ”explode”.

Perhaps, the crossing of the 10 million threshold might explain why Meta has suddenly ramped up its efforts on developing the metaverse and rebranding from Facebook to Meta in the process.

Qualcomm is likely to ride Meta’s explosion in VR usage unless the company decides to develop an in-house chipset along the way. Meta’s VR userbase will increase considerably in the future when its mixed reality headset Project Cambria and AR glasses Project Nazare come into play.

Qualcomm currently provides more than 50 designs for its Snapdragon XR chipsets which can integrate into a variety of headsets including Pico Neo 3, HTC Vive Focus 3, and Lynx MR-1.
