An Nreal Light 2 With a 30% Larger Field of View?
Nreal Light is launching in the U.S. on November 30. During the announcement, an interesting detail about its successor may have leaked out.
On November 30, Nreal Light goes on sale in 20 Verizon stores in the U.S.
Verizon, a U.S. network operator, is Nreal’s official partner in the country. The Augmented Reality glasses will also be available online from December 2 for $599.
Nreal Light is compatible with various 5G-compatible Samsung smartphones as well as the OnePlus 8 5G UW. 17 native apps will be available for users at launch. Additionally, users will be able to stream content from their smartphones to a virtual screen using the AR glasses.
The U.S. launch comes following earlier market launches in South Korea (August 2020), Japan (November 2020) as well as Germany (April 2021).
During the announcement of the U.S. launch, the company made an unwitting mistake that might divulge the technical properties of a yet to be announced Nreal Light 2 which could have an upgraded field of view.
Nreal published a post on LinkedIn which compares the field of view of the Nreal Light with that of other AR devices including the HoloLens 1, Magic Leap 1, and HoloLens 2.
The post contained the image below.
On the far right of Nreal Light, the Nreal Light 2 has been grayed out. Instead of specifying the field of view, the image shows “1.3X” suggesting it could have a field of view 30% larger than that of the Nreal Light glasses. The current Nreal Light glasses have a 53-degree diagonal field of view.
Nreal has since the deleted the post.
It isn’t clear whether the information points to a real successor to the Nreal Light or whether it is just placeholder information that Nreal had forgotten to delete. It could be a mere target value or it could be an actual reference to the specifications to the successor to Nreal Light glasses. It isn’t clear yet and the company hasn’t made any announcements on the same.
Either way, an improvement to the Nreal Light glasses would have to be a pretty advanced AR device because, from 2022, the company will be facing serious competition for the first time. Chip manufacturer Qualcomm announced new AR glasses from Oppo, Lenovo, Motorola, and Xiaomi, all of which are set to arrive next year. Technically, these new AR glasses could be on the same level as the Nreal Light. They could also lie in the same price range and use Android smartphones as feeders just as in the Nreal Light AR glasses. The glasses will on Qualcomm’s new AR platform Snapdragon Spaces which comes with all the important AR features.
The lighter Nreal Air is set to launch in Japan, China, and South Korea this year. In 2022, it will arrive in the Western markets. The Nreal Air are video glasses that are more compact and cheaper than the Nreal Light glasses. The Nreal Air glasses dispense with the AR features and have been completely designed for 2D streaming, which has proven to be the most popular application scenario for the Nreal Light glasses.
