James Cameron Interested in Oculus Rift for Future Films
James Cameron, a celebrated movie director, talked about virtual reality and how it could have a great effect on film-making. The director of some of the world famous movies such as Titanic and Avatar said that he is interested in the idea of making a movie by using VR technology.
He commented that it would be fun to use a device like Oculus Rift VR headset with a movie but he also had some misgivings about the viability of the latest technology.
Besides being a movie director, Cameron is a renowned writer and deep-sea explorer as well. He has already won the hearts of his audience world wide by making one of the best 3D movies titled Avatar. He extended his frontiers and boldly experimented with 3D cinema and now he has ventured into unknown by exploring other 3D technology possibilities.
In a Reddit Ask Me Anything session, Cameron let drop that he would like to incorporate the Oculus Rift device in one of films. When asked about the virtual reality, Cameron replied, “I personally would be very interested to find a way to incorporate VR and a narrative-filmmaking experience. So a narrative directed experience that has individuated pathways where you have choices that you make in real-time, I think that would be a lot of fun.” Expressing some of his doubts, he continued, “I think it would be very technically daunting and expensive, to do it as the same quality level as a typical feature, but it would be fun to experiment with. I don’t think it would take over the feature film market though. I’m very familiar with VR, but I haven’t seen the specific Oculus Rift device.”
In spite of that, it is very likely that James Cameron will soon be working with the Oculus Rift VR technology. During the Reddit sessions, he hinted that he and his crew are already familiar with VR since its inception. They even worked on Avatar in a virtual workspace. They used a virtual camera to create all the shots that are CG in the film. Whenever Cameron decides to approach the virtual reality for his movie, it will very well be in accordance with his wishes.
