Battlefield 3

Battlefield 3 is one of the most popular games released in the shooting genre of video games. Recently, developers have claimed that support for the game with the new Oculus Rift headset is being launched.

Fans all over the world have been waiting anxiously for this update and are enthusiastically talking about it on different forums. The game has been launched by the entertainment giant EA Games and has been very well received ever since it first came out. A developer owned by EA – known by the name of ‘DICE’ – is responsible for this incredibly popular video game. Apparently, a few months ago EA and DICE uploaded a posting for an internship where they were looking for applicants to “investigate and implement support for Oculus Rift SDK in the Frostbite Engine”. The Frostbite engine already powers most of the games released by EA, especially the original Battlefield 3. The developers are very curious to see how Frostbite adapts to Oculus Rift and what difference it makes to the game itself if the two powers are combined.

Previously, the game was shown to fans via a demo prepared by Omnifinity where they used a giant omni-directional treadmill and a full 360 degree panoramic screen for the player to use while playing the game. This huge device was impressive but with the introduction of support with the new Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, it is much more convenient to play Battlefield 3… where you don’t actually have to step on a battlefield, so to speak. Players could run, walk, and crawl on the deck which was 6m wide. The movements of the players were tracked and input through the treadmill where they were fed into the game play. The whole system was pretty remarkable but massively expensive and the maintenance was not feasible or practical for the company.

With the support for Oculus Rift’s virtual reality headset, players can now have a completely immersive gaming experience where even their head movements can be tracked and the entire visual field is full of the game. Developers at DICE are excitedly drawing up plans for new updates that can be added to Battlefield 3 to make the experience an amazingly breathtaking one for the player. They want this game to achieve another level of greatness with the help of the virtual reality headset designed by Oculus Rift. The game is not yet available for commercial use but Virtual Reality Times will report back as soon as latest news about Battlefield 3 is released.
