Lava Inc. Receiving Support for Oculus Rift and Google Cardbord
With the kind of cutthroat competition we have in our technology industry, it comes as no surprise that developers are going the extra mile to one up each other and get their games at the top of the popularity lists.
In August of 2014, a new virtual reality rollercoaster game was launched by the name of ‘Lava Inc.’. The game holds support for Oculus Rift’s second development kit for virtual reality (DK2). Lava Inc has been developed by a group of creators who call themselves The Virtual Dutch Men. The best part about the game is that it is the first of its kind to hold support for the latest version of Oculus Rift’s development kit. This week, the developers are expanding the game into newer avenues, specifically Google Cardboard. Compatibility for Google Cardboard’s smartphone based head mounted display (HMD) and Durovis Dive is being added to Lava Inc.
As the name suggests, the setting of the entire video game is inside this lava refinement facility that operates underground and is completely fictional, of course. A group of employees working for this lava facility decide to take the weekend off and construct something fun. That decided, they set upon building a rollercoaster inside the lava refinement facility! The rollercoaster makes its way around the entire underground area; going through its rooms and caverns which has the added benefit of showing how the entire process works to viewers. It’s actually somewhat educational in nature because the entire operation of the facility is shown during the rollercoaster ride.
Lava Inc. and the complete rollercoaster ride was originally designed solely for Oculus Rift’s second development kit for virtual reality (DK2). The positional tracking is obviously only available while using the DK2, and not if you play the game on your Android smartphone; though most of the features of the rollercoaster ride can still be enjoyed using the standard version of the virtual reality head tracking. For the Android operating system and the smartphone using fandom, Lava Inc. is available for download on Google Play Store for the price of £0.50. This updated version of the game coincides with the hype Google Cardboard has been receiving by its developers, backers and sponsors. They claim that 500,000+ units have been used up till now. Further updates have been promised by the developers. Virtual Reality Times will keep following the progress of Lava Inc. and report back with all the latest news.
