Ever dreamt of taking the immersive VR experience in water? A Kickstarter campaign will allow you to do that soon.

Developed by Remotte, a startup composed by a team of VR enthusiasts passionate to bring an underwater experience to virtual reality, Nautilus VR is a fully-underwater-compliant virtual reality headset. Enabled by smartphones running on popular platforms like Android, iOS, and Windows Phone, Nautilus VR takes only an app and a body of water to swim on to experience a one-of-a-kind VR experience while on water.

Nautilus VR is also compatible for use with Google Cardboard, letting Android users to install the Nautilus VR app and insert their Android smartphone into a compatible Google Cardboard headset. Underwater VR content are provided on the app, and once set up, Cardboard can demo underwater scenery in virtual reality while not actually being on water.

Taking the form of a snorkeling gear, the Nautilus VR headset is basically an underwater helmet, with a breathing pipe that protrudes upwards, and is equipped with an insertion slot that fits the majority of smartphones such as the iPhone 6, Samsung Galaxy S5, and the Sony Xperia Z3. The design and concept of the Nautilus VR headset has been filed for a patent in the United States.

In addition to the head-mounted display, Remotte also supports the education sector by adding support with the Nautilus VR project. Students will be able to appreciate the marine ecosystem diversity with the Nautilus VR app. Students can view the underwater world through immersive VR content on the Nautilus VR app to be supported on Android, iOS, Windows Phone, and Blackberry. Smartphones and tablets running these platforms will be supported by the mobile application.

The Nautilus VR project is made to be open-source, enabling third-party developers to create custom experiences for countless VR applications. One initiative of the startup is to collaborate with third-party developers to create a “digital underwater world” optimized for virtual reality. Remotte targets developers, as well as underwater videographers and digital artists to take part in making a VR-optimized underwater world content.

The Nautilus VR headset will support compatible smartphones of screen sizes ranging from 4.7 inches to 5.2 inches diagonally, and the headset itself is IP67-compliant – it is suited for underwater usage in 1 meter water depth for as long as 30 minutes. Its design is ergonomically considered, and is primarily made of biocompatible materials such as silicone, polycarbonate, and polypropylene.
