Bowstring Makes Cool Temple University VR Tour
The goal was to create a virtual reality experience with groundbreaking camerawork and an immersive narrative storytelling for current and prospective students.
Bowstring Studios created the concept and brought to life a VR experience unique of its kind made exclusively for Temple University in Philadelphia. The VR video is much more than a campus tour, it’s a visual adventure through the campus with an interesting narrative. It shows both prospective and current students the extent of Temple University opportunities in an exciting way thanks to the use of groundbreaking motion camerawork.
“At Bowstring Studios we have a passion for the craft of visual storytelling. While most college VR tours are simply a 360-degree walking tour of a campus, our project with Temple is a combination of engaging narrative and brand new VR capture techniques that change the breadth and speed of the entire experience. This is a first not only in the higher education vertical but across VR as a whole.”
Says Bowstring CEO Enrique Mendoza.
Bowstring Turns University Tours into Something Exciting
The VR experience allows viewers to feel both the student activities and the physical campus with real students in many environments inside the university. The video starts outside Morgan Hall North. Then the viewer is transported beneath the Bell Tower, and then all the way through the classrooms, the theater, training gyms… and even thrown over a rooftop for a bird’s-eye view of Temple University.
“We know that prospective students are increasingly using visual media to explore their future colleges. And we know that students are hungry for digital experiences that are authentic. By creating a virtual-reality tour of Temple, we can give prospective students and their families what they want: a bold and fun way to more fully experience our gorgeous campus.”
Says Emily Spitale, associate vice president, Strategic Marketing & Communications, Temple University.
The use of real actors and a scripted narrative is something very innovative in the higher education space. Thanks to this strategic and interesting approach, Temple University is able to surpass the typical virtual tour and turn the video into something that users will want to engage over and over again.
Bowstring successfully overcame the numerous technical challenges related to the camerawork needed for both terrestrial and aerial shots. Placing the camera, and thus the viewer’s perspective, into running motion is revolutionary production. Virtual Reality camera arrays are usually weighty and too large to be used with a robotic stabilizer.
Temple University Turned Into a VR Experience
Bowstring engineered a camera system connected to a 3-Axis Gimbal system that places the viewer in the action, allowing them to participate in the 360-degree narrative while still being able to control where they are looking throughout the different environments.
“We are taking VR beyond the simple visual experience and into the storytelling arena. That is how we approach all of our projects. We fearlessly embrace all kinds of technologies to produce experiences that bring our clients’stories to life.”
Says Mendoza.
