Unreal Engine Demonstrates VR Teleportation Tech
During the Games Developers Conference, Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney talked about the challenges of creating realistic video game characters, he mentioned hair, eyes, and skin as the most important features to provide realism.
Sweeney then introduced the real star of the show, Ninja’s Theory Tameen Antoniades, who took the stage to show an impressive real-time animation demonstration for the live performance of Senua, from Hellblade.
Photoreal Live Character Performance: Hellblade
Hellblade is Ninja Theory’s upcoming video game for the PC and PlayStation 4, it is powered by Unreal Engine 4. Antoniades showed a video featuring an emotional acting performance of the game’s protagonist, Senua, who was interpreted by Melina Juergens. What’s interesting about the performance is that it was live-streamed in real time through Unreal Engine.
Melina Juergens was wearing an advanced facial rig that was created and optimized by 3Lateral and Cubic Motion for real time performances. Whatever Melina did in real time, it was virtually and instantly teleported to the character. She even sang “Let it go” during the presentation hilariously interrupting Antoniades’ presentation. Looking at Senua felt like looking at a virtual avatar with real human face gestures.
Everyone was amazed, it was both creepy and exciting. We can’t help but think of what VR headsets could make of this in the future. Maybe in 5 years, we will have our own VR avatars talking and moving just like us in a completely virtual environment. We will have to wait and see.
