Intel Bows to Accelerate Virtual Reality

Even though there are many tournaments you can watch in Virtual Reality, there are not any options to compete with VR games online. But Intel is taking big steps to change this: the company is joining efforts with ESL and Oculus to give birth to the VR Challenger League.

This VR gaming competition will offer players the possibility to compete with each other on Ready at Dawn’s Echo Arena and Insomniac’s The Unspoken. The league is expected to begin with online competitions in July, but finalists will decide the ultimate winner in person at the 2018 Intel Extreme Masters World Championship.

“As the popularity of esports continues to rise, the experience should too. Gamers and fans want more immersive experiences. This is why we are working to bring more VR to esports in every possible way. Not only do we want to put fans inside the action with a truly immersive VR spectator experience, we’re also working with partners to make VR esports a reality. A big part of this is creating game titles that are worthy of the pros and fans, and growing the VR esports player base to create the pros of the future.”

Says Gregory Bryant, senior vice president and general manager of the Client Computing Group at Intel Corporation.

Intel is making an interesting bet that will definitely find success very soon but we would be foolish to believe that Virtual Reality will match the extreme popularity of conventional eSports anytime soon. However, this is an important advance, and despite the obvious challenges, VR tourneys will be very fun to watch and participate in.
