YouTube Heatmaps in VR –Hot and Cold

YouTube is now creating heatmaps for any 360-degree video that has more than 1,000 views. This has shown interesting statistics: people spend 75% of their time looking at the front and only 20% looking at what happens behind. So developers should keep most of their effort in the front while not forgetting that people are also slightly interested in what happens around.

Heatmaps in VR allow content creators know exactly what parts of a 360-degree video are catching people’s attention and for how long they look at specific parts of it. YouTube wants to help creators make better and more immersive content. So by using this tool, they can now create even more engaging 360-degree experiences. YouTube basically recommends three things that any creator should keep in mind:

  1. Focus on what’s in the front
  2. Get people’s attention
  3. Keep different experiences in mind

Google also announced a training course for VR content creators that will be called ‘the VR Creator Lab’. The chosen applicants will begin a three-month course in August of 2017 and get between $30,000 and $40,000 to fund their own Virtual Reality project. Applications are now open for anyone here.
