Steampunk VR Scooter, the world’s first VR bumper car attraction has been unveiled. It was released early in the month but the news seemed to have slipped under the radar in the English tech news websites. The experience takes a headset-wearing player into the world of bumper cars, but with a retro twist.

The virtual reality attraction was unveiled at the Erlebnispark Schloss Thurn theme park which is based in Nuremberg on 13 April 2019. It was a product of a partnership between HolodeckVR and Qualisys with the former working on the project with VR Coaster in tapping into unique virtual reality capabilities like the perceived speed of the cars being faster than the actual speeds.

Players in Steampunk VR Scooter can have fun with the bumper cars within an expansive virtual world where they can compete with robotic enemies and other players. The robotic foes can be overcome by forming alliances with other allies or by leveraging the game’s many extras and upgrades that can be found through the game.

From the outside, in the real world, players in Steampunk VR Scooter look like any other players enjoying their standard bumper cars and wearing virtual reality headsets in a theme park or like in your typical car-based Mario Kart game or a rollercoaster ride.  However, once they are inside the game in their VR headsets, the players in Steampunk VR Scooter will get a very different view from reality where they will be immersed into a retro-futuristic steampunk-inspired world where they will take on each other and robots. The bumper cars, for example, will be appearing as steampunk-styled vehicles. The players will also be able to visualize abysses and cliffs within the virtual environment. The players will be riding these “retro-futuristic” steam engines and competing against one another as well as other robotic enemies that will emerge in the virtual environment. They must also do this while navigating their way through a spectacular world that is filled with abysses and cliffs.

Holodeck VR partnered with Qualysis to actualize its vision of virtual reality bumper cars by leveraging on the latter’s mocap technology. The Qualisys input has enabled the VR company to realize the steampunk-themed virtual reality bumper cars. Qualisys deployed a multiple camera setup to bring out the bumper cars effect. It worked with a Miqus mocap and “daisy-chain” camera setup that enable the tech company to track up to 80 targets within a demanding virtual reality environment.

It’s a groundbreaking new technology that also creates impressive virtual reality attraction that takes VR environment to a new level of creativity. It is the virtual reality bumper cars attraction ever created, according to a Variety report. For now the game is only available in Germany so if you wish to experience it, you will have to book a flight and head off to theme park based in Nuremberg.
