HTC Launches a New Unit that is Entirely Focused on Enterprise VR Solutions
HTC seems geared into pumping more firepower into its enterprise virtual reality efforts by creating a new unit, Vive Enterprise Solutions, that will be wholly focused on meeting the professional virtual reality needs of clients in a vast scope of requirements ranging from virtual reality hardware to software and services sector. This is coming hot on the heels of the launch of the Vive Pro last year and Vive Pro Eye this year.
The new organization will provide businesses with a complete portfolio of extended reality (XR) solutions. HTC aims to use this unit to assist companies looking for complete mixed reality solutions from concept to delivery, be they hardware, software or service solutions that will be uniquely tailored to suit specific client needs and processes. The tech giant will soon launch a Viveport business portal geared at the most popular B2B applications.
The new enterprise unit will be headed by the Vive General Manager Dan O’Brien whose role will now be expanding to encompass the new VIVE Enterprise Solutions. While he will still be based in Seattle, he will be tapping into the regional markets in order to collaborate, create and engage in enterprise virtual reality implementation at all levels. The unit is more like a virtual reality production company where the company will be both a software and hardware solutions provider. The team will be partnering with developers and some of the leading digital transformation enterprises. The company is looking to ultimately redefine how enterprises of all sizes can be able to streamline and optimize their business systems to tap into the productivity, efficiency and safety gains while reducing costs and saving time.
HTC’s development and publishing unit, VIVE Studios, is currently building a business collaboration tool known as VIVE Sync which will enable up to 30 people to collaborate in a virtual meeting space. This is a global collaboration tool that presents significant opportunity for the company.
This is not the company’s first foray into enterprise VR applications. Over the past few years, VIVE has collaborated with small, medium and large enterprises as a provider of VR hardware solutions. For example, it developed VIVE X that helps in making selections of investments in developers of VR infrastructure and content. At the time, the company didn’t have infrastructure to leverage its position so it had to facilitate the initiative of other players.
The company’s new focus on enterprise development is something that has been long time coming ever since it made its first appearance in the market with the launch of its PC-based VIVE headset in 2016. Since then, VIVE has done a good job developing and nurturing the market through a gradual and organic consumer adoption of its VR products. This has mainly been through the demand for gaming PCs but the company has also developed a very multifaceted B2B approach that will come in handy as it shifts its focus to the enterprise market.

As more businesses discover the VR opportunity, enterprise VR apps are currently becoming the ‘killer app’, the in-thing, and it’s important for players in the industry to tap into this and develop solutions for both small and larger commercial VR creators that will allow them to realize success and address business needs. In this endeavor, VIVE is particularly in a pole position to tap into this market by offering a comprehensive business solution thanks in part to its ability to leverage its years of hardware innovation and the collaborative industry relationships that it has cultivated over the years. To this end, VIVE has already done novel projects. There is the public speaking training tool known as Ovation that leverages the gaze-tracking functionality in the Vive Pro eye to detect the exact position where the user is looking at. The tool even allows users to choose different kinds of venues or settings for public speaking which range from a small conference room to a huge lecture hall. It’s the perfect tool for those who have a problem with public speaking, enabling them to hone their public speaking skills within a very realistic virtual reality environment.
Other interesting enterprise uses include Vobling which is used in training railway conductors in Europe; and SimforHealth which is a great training app for home nurses.
On the hardware front, the VIVE Pro gives users an impressive 32’x32’ for room-scale free roaming which is ideal for the location-based entertainment applications.
There is also VIVE’s high-end and all-in-one virtual reality headset, the VIVE Focus Plus, that provides users with an untethered 6DoF VR HMD with a resolution of 2880×1600, similar to that of the more sophisticated Vive Pro.
