The first round of software updates are now arriving on the standalone Oculus Quest headset and the app support on the platform is just about to widen dramatically. This week, there will be some minor but significant improvements coming to the headset but Oculus is still planning for Quest to run the apps for the lower-end Oculus Go headset by the end of 2019 through a “Go emulation” mode that will run the old apps, a move that will add hundreds of new virtual reality experiences to the Quest platform.

One of the main updates that is arriving this week is the Oculus Venues, a first-party social VR app which is already available on the Samsung Gear VR and Oculus Go. The Oculus Venues app immerses users and their friends inside cartoonish avatars that hanging out on the edge of key events such as concerts, movies and sports. This allows users to watch these events while interacting with other people just like you would when you are physically there.

The Oculus Venues platform feature will cram stadium-sized experiences within a VR headset. You can use the platform’s Venues feature to hang out with friends (represented as avatars) in a virtual social experience. The app enables you to meet and interact with new people in various virtual events such as soccer games, basketball games, concerts and many others.

The Oculus Venues feature will be coming to Quest as part of the platform’s summer lineup which will also include events such as the Liverpool vs Sporting de Portugal game which takes place at the Yankee Stadium. Users can also immerse themselves in the Tenacious D’s performance Post-Apocalypto, the animated and rock opera.

The addition of Venues is part of the Oculus July updates. This update will also include a Quest update for Guardian. The Guardian system is the feature used in specifying the area where they’d wish to safely play while in virtual reality.

The Guardian update now improves its ability to automatically recognize multiple play spaces situated in different rooms. It will also enhance support for multiple Guardian setups for the same room. The update also adds the ability for the player to change their play space settings like the floor height so that they don’t have to begin from scratch every time.

Oculus has also added some control tweaks for the Quest firmware with control changes such as improvements in the Touch tracking algorithm which will make it possible for the controller to recognize the trickier poses. The improvements in the tracking algorithm have been effected in both Quest and Rift S so owners of these virtual reality headsets will see noticeable improvements in the tracking and will thus get fewer errors.

Another key update is the Passthrough+ feature. Oculus now enables users to switch it on indefinitely, an update that has been widely requested by users. Oculus has also made it possible for users to link games to Gateways. The last update is the camera function which allows users to take photos of their Home or even selfies and groufies of their avatars.
