There is more Kickstarter crowdfunding success this week as the cyberpunk-inspired virtual reality project Low-Fi from the indie virtual reality studio IRIS VR hits its fundraising goal after just four days. This is coming hot on the heels of the VR Kickstarter fundraising campaign by VRGO which hit its target a few days ago. The Low-Fi crowdfunding has raised more than Canadian CA$60,000 in just four days.

More than 700 backers raised USD$45,552 (CA$60,000) to hit the goal that IRIS had set for the crowdfunding campaign. The product already has a working alpha build. In 2016, IRIS VR released Technolust and its latest project has been produced from the proceeds of that initial work. IRIS is now seeking additional funds to help it add more content into the game.

Low-Fi is inspired by IRIS’ first immersive experience Technolust. With the fundraising target having been met and with 25 days left before the Kickstarter campaign concludes, the indie studio is now shifting its attention to the stretch goals which have changed a bit since the initial launch.

The original stretch goals include both Oculus Quest and PlayStation VR support at $850,000 and $500,000 respectively. The studio has since significantly reduced these while adding other goals. The current list consists of the following goals:-

  • Oculus Quest Support: $600,000
  • Next-Gen PlayStation VR Support: $256,000
  • Licensed Music: $52,000
  • Wastelands Area: $64,000
  • Undisclosed: $555,000
  • Undisclosed: $512,000
  • Undisclosed: $420,000
  • Undisclosed: $100,000
  • Undisclosed: $90,000
  • Undisclosed: $75,000

Low-Fi has been described as a huge “open-world sandbox-style adventure” that also includes action elements. The game offers players a non-linear world that is inspired by films such as Robocop and Blade Runner. The player is plunged into a dystopian future and cast as a police officer that has recently been transferred from a crime-ridden part of the city-block 303. Most of the humanity has been merged with the ubiquitous virtual reality simulation The Platform while those that haven’t yet are called ‘low-fi’ and as the player, you will be one of them. You will patrol the streets and skies and there will be human intelligence (and below artificial life forms) and other low-fi put under your jurisdiction.

Your job will entail maintaining law and order, advancing the narratives and also solving crimes. You can also push into the seedier parts of the city, take bribes instead of arresting criminals or even frame other parties for personal gain. Play the bad cop. You can also opt to simply hang out in the arcades and casinos and spend your credits.

IRIS VR has outlined some huge ambitions for Low-Fi including the following:-

  • Companion NPCs (both synthetic and biological)
  • Lots of crimes and narratives that the player can solve and explore, including branching dialogue and narratives.
  • Arcade Mini-games
  • Interactive photo-realistic NPCs
  • An optional gun-play
  • Procedural markets that come with 1000s of purchasable item possibilities.

The game has been developed for PC VR headsets such as HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Windows Mixed Reality headset and Valve Index. The development build for Low-Fi will be sent to the project’s Kickstarter backers next month. The fully finished versions of the game will hit the market some time in 2020.
