Surgery Training Platform ‘Osso VR’ New Update Dramatically Improves Graphical Fidelity
Osso VR provides surgeons with an immersive platform where they can learn complex surgical operations with a depth and graphical presentation that is impossible to find on textbooks. Now the platform undergoes an update to create a higher level of graphical fidelity and immersion of its models and environments.
The surgery training platform Osso VR is launching a new update that dramatically improves its graphical fidelity to a very high level. The new update will increase both the realism and immersion for users leveraging the platform to train before they carry out surgeries in real-life.
The new Osso VR visuals have been described as “movie-quality” and were created by a leading art director a well as the software/UI team which included, among others, a former games industry talent.
Many of the VR surgical instruction platforms are still largely based on some rudimentary modestly shaded anatomical models that have not been very convincing. Some are also based on flat videos while others feature basic user interfaces which don’t do a good job at replicating the medical scenarios with the real-world nuances and detail.
Many of the early virtual reality medical training systems have already produced measurable health benefits. Osso VR has stated that its previous surgical products yielded a peer-reviewed 230% improvements in the surgical performance. The company’s new visual upgrade will deliver very high fidelity and believable virtual operating rooms where doctors will be able to even interact with patients whose conditions (such as skin and wounds) reflect the surgical realities.
The new graphics are expected to be more life-like. Below, you can see some of the images that might give you an indication of the level of detail that Osso art director Jonathan Sabella is delivering with the new update. Sabella has previously worked on a number of Marvel Movies as well as the Star Wars VR experience Vader Immortal. He was also involved in the Mexican film director Alejandro Iñárritu’s Carne y Arena VR film which won an Oscar. In the Marvel titles, Sabella created a realistic anatomy of memorable sequences that included iconic characters like Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Thanos and Deadpool. There were even moments when the films would live or die depending on the accuracy of fully-digital objects.
For the new Osso VR update, Sabella -who also has expertise in human and comparative anatomy-worked on a virtual reality project that carries an actual life and death implications. Thanks to his contribution in the Osso VR experience, the new surgery training experience now offers participants much more including more convincing shading, textures as well as modeling that enables the doctors to see everything such as the injuries as well as tools. The rendering is highly immersive and realistic and is as close as possible to what they actually look like in real-life.
For the first time, medical VR is providing surgeons with content that is clinically accurate and emotionally compelling thanks to the contributions of some of the top names in the big-budget films as well as game studios.
To achieve this, Osso has also brought on board software developer as well as customer experience specialists from the gaming space. They include the senior software engineer John Rittenhouse who was previously a VR/massively multiplayer game developer at CCP games; Conrad Spotts who is formerly the customer experience at Nintendo. Osso has also recruited other customer experience specialists from Google, Big Fish Games and Microsoft.
By polishing its current interactive training experience to such a high level of refinement, Osso could easily differentiate its VR medical training solution from the other unsatisfactory offerings that are currently available in the marketplace.
Osso’s old platform has already been deployed in more than 20 teaching hospitals as well as 8 medical device companies spread over 20 counties. The update has already began rolling out. If you want to see some demos, you can schedule it via the company’s website.
