Mega Man Franchise Comes to Japanese VR Arcade on July 18
Virtual reality location-based entertainment (LBE) venues have faced a tough time this year. Some of the top players like Ubisoft have been trying to inject some vitality by offering license-free games or through the release of new games. This week another player, Capcom, announced the Mega Man VR: Targeted Virtual World!! for its virtual reality section of the Capcom Plaza which is based in Ikebukuro in Japan.
In Japan, the game is known as Rockman VR: Aimed at the Virtual World and is set to debut on July 18 at the Capcom Plaza which is based in Tokyo’s Ikebukuro district. Mega Man VR is a single-player shooter where the player suit-up as the blue bomber and then deploy the Mega Man’s iconic arm cannon to topple enemies. The gameplay details of the VR game are yet to be released. Reservations for Rockman VR are already open.
In a description posted in Japanese and Google-translated, Mega Man VR is described as a “peaceful virtual reality world” where all are having fun playing until the series villain Dr. Wily puts on his headset and is plotting to hack into and conquer the virtual reality world. To accomplish his mission, Dr. Wily is equipped with a virtual reality headset by Dr. Light. The players themselves have to go into the virtual dimension as Mega Man in order to stop Wily’s evil plans.
The trailer released for the game has been cinematic and does not show the gameplay. Instead, you will see Mega Man up against other smaller enemies before a massive brick-based boss crashes into the scene. It is likely this will be the final boss that the players will face off against.
Mega Man VR markedly differs from the other virtual reality videogames that have been launched in Europe and the U.S. where the multiplayer experiences are emphasized to an extent that getting into the VR arcade almost has the feel of an event.
It isn’t apparent whether Mega Man might replace one of the two older versions of the game though there is a likelihood of that happening based on the available space.
So far, no other Mega Man VR sites have been announced yet so it is not clear whether the experience is likely to arrive at other arcades in territories outside Japan once these open again after the pandemic. Or, perhaps, fans might hope and pray for a release on home headsets even though none of Capcom’s Japanese virtual reality games have yet to make that quantum shift from the arcade to homes so far.
In the meantime, there are lots of other multiplayer LBE VR titles that you can try out such as Mario Kart Arcade GP VR, Ghost Patrol VR and Space Junkies. Some LBE locations such as The VOID and Zero Latency also offer multiplayer VR experiences in an arcade setting.
