Location-based VR company Zero Latency is getting rid of the backpack PCs and replacing them with streaming to Vive Focus 3.

At the moment, Zero Latency’s product offering features an HP Reverb headset that is interfaced with heavy backpack PCs that each user wears.

In its new offering, Zero Latency is replacing these backpack PCs with a Vive Focus 3 headset where content will be wirelessly streamed from the on-site PCs through Wi-Fi 6E.

The HTC Vive Focus 3 is a standalone virtual reality headset that targets enterprise users and is priced at $1299, four times the price of the popular consumer-focused Meta Quest 2, which goes for $299.

In November last year, HTC announced a massive software update for the Vive Focus 3 which focused on location-based VR uses. The update added support for multiple headsets that share the same tracking space, a feature called colocation. The update also considerably expanded the maximum tracking boundary to 33×30 meters.

A recent Vive Focus 3 update also added Wi-Fi 6E support with the new 6 GHz Wi-Fi frequency band. Previously, the headset had 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency bands and the new higher frequency band enables higher bandwidth while minimizing interference from other devices. However, it doesn’t reach far enough or penetrate walls. The 6GHz band is so new in Wi-Fi applications that most national regulators across the globe are yet to approve it.

Zero Latency has incorporated its new system into its arcade in Melbourne, Australia, and has said that it will launch it in select sites in both Europe and the US this summer.

Zero Latency

Zero Latency currently offers several experiences including a zombie survival adventure titled Undead Arena, Far Cry VR and a space mission titled Singularity. The VRcade has also added a competitive title dubbed Sol Raiders.

All of these experiences leverage a virtual reality controller that is attached to a custom gun accessory. However, The VR arcade company says that it is also looking into the use of Vive Focus 3’s controller-free hand-tracking for its upcoming experiences.
