Following the WWDC keynote, the supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo tweets that he is expecting more delays in the unveiling of the Apple AR/VR headset. In a series of latest tweets, Kuo says he believes that the Apple AR/MR headset shipping date will be postponed to the second quarter of 2023 due to disruptions in its development by the lockdowns in Shanghai.

Apple did not provide any clues about the AR/MR headset at the WWDC 2022 but Kuo has provided a prediction of the headset schedule that sees an unveiling in January 2023, with pre-orders beginning in the second quarter of 2023.

Kuo expects the headset’s Engineering Validation Test (EVT) to happen in the third quarter of 2022 with the unveiling occurring in January 2023. The development kit will roll out four weeks following the media event (unveiling). The analyst expects Apple to begin accepting pre-orders for the headset in the second quarter of 2023. According to Kuo, the market launch of the headset could also happen in the second quarter of next year, just before the WWDC 2023.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that the extended delays in the unveiling of the headset were a result of the extensive software preparations required that went beyond the hardware as well as the Reality OS.

Gurman describes these software preparations as “an entire set of new VR- and AR-powered Apple apps and experiences”, “a slew of input paradigms” that have never ever been seen on Apple’s products as well as a “completely new platform for third-party developers.”

He wrote that Apple’s work on realityOS as well as related frameworks have significantly accelerated in recent months, especially on the Reality Composer, Metal and video codes. Gurman said that Apple’s recent release of VR video and spatial audio for Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro wasn’t coincidental. The company is also working on a new version of SwiftUI for VR and AR apps.

Gurman writes that the operating system of the Apple AR/MR headset emerged as a version of tvOS and iOS and it appears like Apple wants to make it easier to convert iPad and Apple TV apps for its upcoming headset.

Additionally, Apple is also building its own apps. Including a virtual reality version of Facetime which will feature face-scanning capability for the realistically animated memojis, a virtual reality version of Maps, as well as rOS variants of Apple apps such as Calendar and Notes. The Apple headset can reportedly augment Mac’s screen and render it in 3D which would make it a serious contender as a future of work device.
